Well it's a brand new year and a great time to start some new habits if you are you looking to improve your life,  get healthier and feel better.  Did you know, it only takes small changes to make a difference? Here are ten easy habits you can adopt this year for a happier, healthier, and even potentially a longer life.<br />

1. Get into the habit of drinking more water everyday.  Not only because water is good for you but because you'll find that when you drink more water you'll drink less soda or other sugary drinks.  Don't be fooled, diet drinks aren't any better because they're chock full of artificial sweeteners and chemicals.   Try herbal, green and regular tea if you want to add some flavor to your water. I've lived with allergies and asthma my entire life so I've learned a few tricks and tips to make life easier. One of the most common ways to control your allergies is to simply avoid whatever it is you are allergic to.  Stay indoors during pollen season, avoid animals and do not eat foods you are allergic to, but the one thing you really can't avoid dust. House dust is a common allergen, it may contain mites, animal dander, pollen, mold, residue from cleaning products and fibers from fabrics.<br />
<br />
Dust mites are microscopic organisms that are the primary cause of dust allergies. It is actually the excrement of these mites that people are allergic to.  Dust is everywhere, and not just where you can see it either.  You can clean and dust all your want, but there's still millions of dust mites lurking in your home.  The key to staying healthy is to know how to get rid of them.  <br />
<br />
Here are some tips to help you out: <br />

<blockquote> Choose lino, tile or hardwood flooring, it may be expensive, but they are a whole lot better for your health.  Carpets are a great place for dust mites to hide out and vacuuming does little to rid you of the problem.  If you can't get rid of the carpet in your home, use a hepa filtered vacuum and a steam cleaner regularly.  You can have hard flooring with area rugs, simply choose ones that can easily be washed or steam cleaned to remove dust.<br />

You spend nearly one third of your life in your bedroom so it's important to keep it as dust free as possible. Just like your carpet, mattresses are a great place for dust and mites to hide. Since you probably can't afford to replace your mattress all the time, look for specialized allergy covers for your mattress.  While you are at it get some of these covers for your pillows too.  <br />

Now, your mattress and pillows aren't the only place in your bed that dust and mites like to live.  They can also accumulate in your sheets, blankets and comforters.  That's why it is important to wash all your bedding in hot water at least once a week.  Use a comforter made from an easy to care for synthetic material rather than down or other natural fibers.<br />

If you have pets keep them out of your bedroom, they shed hair and dander, not to mention the dirt they track in from out doors which just adds to the problem. <br />

Invest in a good quality air filter system. There is a number of brands of special filters on the market that remove dust and other allergens out of the air you breathe.  They may cost more, but they're certainly well worth it if you are allergic to house dust.  Most people know you're supposed to change you home's air filters every three months, but that doesn't mean they do.  Mark it on your calendar so that you don't forget to change the air filter regularly.    <br />

Those little knick knacks all over your house may look nice, but they can collect dust.  Books and dried flowers are the worst. Try to reduce the number of items you have displayed and choose decorations that are easy to dust or clean.<br />

Dust and clean with something that actually picks up the dust and keeps it on the duster. Traditional dusters and cloths usually just push dust around and release it back into the air, try a static cleaner or use a damp cloth. This way you know you are getting rid of dust not just moving it back into the air so it can land somewhere else. <br />

Many women depend on using mammograms as their only line of defense when it comes to breast cancer detection, but mammograms are only one part of a variety of detection methods and should not be used alone.  So, for proper breast care, you should be performing regular breast self exams and getting breast exams from you doctor.  In addition, you may also require extra screening, including a digital mammogram.<br />

Your first mammogram is usually given at around age 40. However, it is common for women to develop breast cancer before that age and it tends to spread faster in younger women.  That's why it's important for you to perform regular breast self exams and get breast exams from a medical professional.    <br />

Did you know that most breast health issues are first discovered through breast self exams, not mammograms?  One reason is because they can be done more often. In addition to these traditional methods, a new technology, called the digital mammogram, is now being used as another weapon in the fight against breast cancer.  The methods used in taking a digital mammogram are essentially the same, except that the results can be viewed immediately instead of having to wait for film to develop.  This is often used in finding the specific spot of a growth so they can take a biopsy.  Faster results mean that the procedure can be done more quickly and with less pain or discomfort.<br />

Remember, if you want to have proper protection against breast cancer, you need to do monthly self exams and have regular breast exams along with your regular mammograms.  You are worth it!<br />

You may be suffering from a disease called fibromyalgia.   This is a chronic condition that causes pain throughout the body, along with other inconvenient and sometime debilitating symptoms.<br />

While only a small percentage of the population has fibromyalgia, the occurrence of this disease is significantly higher in women, with the majority of cases occurring in your late 30's, all the way into your 50's.<br />

Sleep studies show that women with fibromyalgia patients tend to have burst of activity in their brain intermittently during stage 4 sleep. Lack of proper sleep causes fibromyalgia patients to experience moderate to severe fatigue. The American Medical Association now says that normal blood pressure readings for a healthy adult should be 120/80. This figure was lowered from what used to considered within normal range for systolic and diastolic pressure. High blood pressure or hypertension in men is a serious and often fatal disease.  Just as water pumped into a pipe exerts pressure on its  surface, your heart pumps blood through your arteries, and the force of the blood flow exerts pressure on the arterial walls. Therefore, just as too much water pressure is bad for the life of a pipe, too much blood pressure eventually damages your arteries. High blood pressure can lead to heart failure; kidney failure; or stroke.<br />
<br />
The combination of hypertension and being overweight increases the chances of developing one or more conditions. In fact, the older you are, the more likely you will develop hypertension unless you take steps to prevent it.  If you are overweight when you are young, you may develop hypertension at an earlier age. However, it has been suggested that hypertension is also inherited, which doesn't help the situation either.<br />

The scary thing is that you may not even realize you have this condition, as the symptoms do not reveal themselves.  However, you should assume you are a candidate for hypertension if you are over 40; if there is a history of this condition in your family; and you are overweight.<br />

Being overweight is another cause of hypertension. It is important to find an appropriate diet regimen and exercise program to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. While there may be a connection between weight and hypertension, research reveals people who are at their ideal weight have less tendency to develop hypertension than those who are overweight.<br />

Type A personalities may be more prone to hypertension than others. Stress is evident in our lives every day; but the key is to not let it take over your life. While we all work hard and try to live comfortably, the pressure to succeed rapidly is taking its toll, physically, emotionally and mentally. It is also a contributing factor to hypertension. If you have a highly stressed job, or find that you cannot fill the demands placed upon you, you might want to find another job that is not so stressful. Also keep in mind; hypertension is not exclusive to any one group. It affects people from all walks of life. To what degree it can cause damage to your heart, kidneys and brain depends on its severity.<br />

If you find that you have taken every precaution and your blood pressure is still high, your doctor may prescribe medication only if he or she feels it is absolutely necessary. Some of the drugs have side effects, while others can be tolerated. While on any type of medication, do not fall under the assumption that because you may feel better you can stop taking the drugs. Should you worry? If your children are not eating a healthy diet and getting enough physical activity maybe you should. According to the American heart association: <br />

<blockquote>"Almost 23 percent of children ages 9-13 don't get any free-time physical activity. Overweight children and adolescents have a 62 percent to 98 percent chance of being overweight at age 35, which increases their risk of heart disease." </blockquote><br />

While those statistics are scary you can make sure your children are not at risk for high cholesterol by the time they are teenagers. Provide your children with healthy meals and teach them how to make healthy food choices.<br />
<br />
With today's busy lifestyles many families eat out or serve already prepared and instant foods for most meals. But heres the danger; most types of restaraunt meals, take out and prepared meals you buy at the grocery store, are high in saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, added sugars and sodium. Not to mention portion sizes have increased dramatically over the last several years, which means consuming more calories too.<br />
<br />
When eating out try to reduce foods high in dietary cholesterol:<br />
<blockquote>To keep portion sizes smaller, split an entrée with a family member or dining partner.<br />
<br />
Ask for sauces and dressing on the side to control the fats, sodium and calories you eat.<br />
<br />
When ordering, choose foods that have been grilled, baked, steamed or poached instead of fried, sautéed, smothered or au gratin.<br />

Don't forget the salad bar for lots of fresh vegtables and fruits.</blockquote><br />

When eating home cooked meals try to eliminate foods high in dietary cholesterol:<br />
